Position description

Reporting to the Assistant Controller, the Senior Financial Analyst is responsible for the preparation and filing of external financial reports, maintenance of the general ledger and the financial IT systems, accounting and analytical review of various accounts and supervision of an accounting staff member.

The primary focus of this position is external financial reporting and oversight of daily accounting transactions. Responsibilities also involve cash receipting and handling and maintaining Financial Services website information.

Responsibilities

Prepare or supervise the preparation of various reports:

  • Annual charity returns
  • Canadian Association of University Business Officers (CAUBO) annual financial reports
  • Various Statistics Canada reports
  • Annual IRS forms and fillings
  • Miscellaneous reports as required

Maintain the General Ledger System:

  • Oversee and maintain the general ledger in Ellucian Colleague and other financial systems as per established procedures, including access authorization and account structures and the Financial Services website information, as well as training on these systems
  • Test any proposed software changes to the accounting system to determine impact on financial reports and processes and assist with the implementation of any new related software
  • Oversee and maintain on-line account signing authority access, which includes establishing access for new employees, making changes as necessary, maintaining master listing of signing authority of all general ledger accounts, and investigating problems as they arise; maintaining signing authority account set up for online requisitioning

Other:

  • Oversee the processing of accounting entries (timely preparation and approval), and liaise with departments to ensure timely submission of necessary information
  • Reconcile and analyze various accounts as per established procedures
  • Maintain and monitor University equipment budget as per established procedures and approve all related PO
  • Approve purchase order requisitions from accounts under the purview of the position
  • Approve disbursements and journal entries on same accounts as per established procedures, ensuring disbursements are appropriate under the terms of the grant or contract and that funds are in place to cover expenses
  • Support the annual audit by providing information relating to accounts under purview of this position
  • Provide back up and support for the other members of Financial Services as required
  • Respond to inquiries from the campus community regarding accounts under purview of this position

• Perform other related duties as required

Qualifications/skills

  • An undergraduate business degree required, with a concentration in accounting preferred
  • Minimum of 3 to 5 years of relevant financial accounting experience including experience in compliance, business process and financial management, preferably in a post-secondary environment
  • Excellent relationship-building skills
  • Supervisory experience preferred
  • Strong communication skills; demonstrated ability to work effectively with people, easily moving from working independently to contributing as part of a team
  • Strong analytical, organizational and time management skills
  • Accuracy is essential; extreme attention to detail is critical
  • Expert proficiency with the Microsoft Office Suite, including advanced Excel skills
  • Demonstrated ability to quickly learn new software, accounting and reporting systems
  • Aptitude in learning financial systems and information technology would be an asset.
  • Work experience involving an ERP (enterprise resource planning) system is preferred
  • Experience in not-for-profit and fund accounting and/or experience in a post-secondary education environment an asset
  • Canadian Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation preferred (extensive accounting experience would be considered in lieu of)
